Smart Solutions for Invasive Species: The Myna Trap Challenge

How might we develop smart traps to capture the common Myna (Arcidotheres tristis) - an invasive bird in Qatar?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know: From Registration to Submission Guidelines and More

This challenge, organized by MOECC, focuses on developing innovative, sustainable, and humane solutions to capture the invasive Common Myna bird species (Acridotheres tristis) in Qatar. The Common Myna poses significant ecological and economic challenges, such as:

  • Threatening biodiversity by competing with native bird species.
  • Damaging infrastructure by nesting in air conditioning units and pipelines.
  • Aggressive behavior toward humans and other animals.

The goal is to design efficient trapping methods that address these issues without harming non-target species. Participants are encouraged to propose novel, scalable solutions that go beyond traditional methods, such as manual traps, which are currently used but have limited effectiveness.

The challenge is open to startups from all over the world.

To register, click on the “Participate here” button at the top of the brief page. Follow the steps to create an account and complete your profile.

Key Dates:
  • Submission Deadline: April 14th, 2025
  • Clarification Deadline: August 2025
  • Announcement of Winners: October 2025

Participants are required to complete and submit a participation form. Make sure to follow the guidelines provided in the "Challenge Details" section.

Participation in this challenge is strictly on behalf of startups. Each startup is considered a single participant, and submissions should represent the organization's collective solution. While internal collaboration within the startup is encouraged, the entry must be submitted under the startup's name rather than individual team members.

Winners will receive cash contributions from QRDI (up to 100,000 USD), mentorship and support for solution development, access to relevant datasets and to pilot site(s). Check out the "Incentives" section at the bottom of the brief page for more details.
