Revolutionizing Renewable Power Storage through Repurposing EV Batteries for Future Energy Resurgence

As Qatar’s renewable energy ambition accelerates toward 2030, KAHRAMAA manages complex energy demands that require large-scale grid storage to balance solar intermittency. Today, there is a critical need to bridge the gap between growing renewable capacity and the emerging waste stream of end-of-life EV lithium-ion batteries.

KAHRAMAA is calling on innovators to develop a Battery Energy Storage Solution (BESS) that translates second-life battery potential into a functional engineering design. This initiative seeks to solve dual challenges by creating a circular economy for batteries while stabilizing the national grid.

💡 Your Mission:
Create a sustainable, grid-connected Battery Energy Storage Solution (BESS) that repurposes end-of-life EV lithium-ion batteries by balancing technical grid stability and performance, environmental life extension and pollution prevention, and economic bankability compared to new battery deployment.

🚀 Why Participate?
- Work directly with KAHRAMAA, a regional leader and pioneer, on a high-impact national energy challenge.
- Demonstrate your capabilities in BESS engineering, life-cycle assessment, and renewable integration at scale.
- Gain access to operational standards, subject-matter experts, and potential pilot sites within Qatar.
- Receive up to USD 100,000 in QRDI funding for assessment, engineering design, and a small-scale pilot setup.
- Explore opportunities for commercial deployment within planned 500MW storage facilities or new greenfield projects in Qatar.

Be part of shaping the next generation of smart, circular energy operations through integrated movement intelligence. 🌟

Challenge Statement

Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Energy: Help Shape the Future of Circular Grid Operations

The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) is seeking solution providers to develop a sustainable Battery Energy Storage Solution (BESS) that repurposes end-of-life EV lithium-ion batteries into grid-connected storage. As Qatar accelerates its renewable energy capacity toward 2030, there is an urgent need for large-scale grid storage to balance solar intermittency. Simultaneously, used EV batteries—no longer meeting automotive performance requirements—are becoming an emerging waste stream that requires innovative repurposing to prevent pollution and extend life.

Your solution should combine advanced engineering and life-cycle assessment to provide a grid-connected BESS pilot that balances three pillars: Technical grid stability and safety, Environmental sustainability and life extension, and Economic bankability compared to new battery deployment. The goal is to translate second-life battery potential into a detailed engineering design and a small-scale pilot study that is practical for Qatar's extreme heat and dust conditions.
